About the AU Classification
The AU (Auditing) group covers internal auditors and external audit professionals working across the federal government. AU employees conduct financial audits, performance audits, compliance reviews, and program evaluations to ensure that federal departments are managing public funds appropriately and achieving program objectives. The largest concentrations of AU staff are at the Office of the Auditor General (OAG), the Canada Revenue Agency, and departmental internal audit divisions.
AU-01 covers junior auditors and audit trainees. AU-02 is the working-level auditor conducting independent audit engagements. AU-03 covers senior auditors and audit team leaders. AU-04 and above are management positions — directors of audit, chief audit executives, and principals at the OAG. Many AU positions require or strongly prefer CPA designation, and the OAG specifically recruits auditors with diverse professional backgrounds including accounting, engineering, and environmental science.
The AU group is represented by PIPSC. Federal auditing is distinct from private-sector audit work: rather than auditing financial statements for market purposes, federal auditors assess whether government programs are achieving value for money and whether departments are complying with Treasury Board policies and legislation. The Auditor General's reports to Parliament are among the most influential accountability documents in Canadian government, and AU employees at the OAG contribute directly to these high-profile publications.
