How Federal Salary Comparison Works

Federal public service salaries vary significantly between classification groups and levels. An AS-04, EC-04, and IT-02 may all be considered “mid-career” positions, but their pay scales differ based on the collective agreement negotiated for each group. This tool lets you compare up to three classifications side by side to see exactly how they stack up at every pay step.

Some classification groups share the same pay scale — for example, AS and PM positions are paid identically at every level. Others, like IT (Information Technology) and FI (Financial Management), have higher pay scales that reflect market demand for specialized skills. The EX (Executive) group has its own separate pay structure set by the Governor in Council rather than through collective bargaining.

When comparing salaries, keep in mind that total compensation includes more than base pay. Benefits like the Public Service Pension Plan, health and dental coverage, vacation entitlements, and job security are consistent across most classifications. However, some groups negotiate additional allowances — for instance, CS/IT employees in certain roles may receive recruitment and retention allowances on top of their base salary.
