About Federal Classification Groups
The Canadian federal public service uses a classification system to organize positions by the type of work performed. Each classification group — such as AS (Administrative Services), EC (Economics and Social Science Services), IT (Information Technology), PM (Programme Administration), and FI (Financial Management) — has its own pay scale determined through collective bargaining between the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat and the relevant bargaining agent.
Classifications are organized into broad categories including Administrative, Technical & IT, Financial, Science & Policy, Operational, and Executive. Within each classification, there are multiple levels (e.g., AS-01 through AS-07) reflecting increasing responsibility, and each level has several pay steps that employees progress through annually.
Use this directory to browse all federal classification groups, compare salary ranges, and find detailed pay scales for any position in the Government of Canada. You can also use the salary comparison tool to compare classifications side by side or the take-home pay calculator to see your after-tax income.
