How Federal Job Titles Work

Unlike the private sector, the Government of Canada doesn't use standard job titles. Instead, every position is assigned a classification group (like AS, EC, IT, or PM) and a level number that determines its pay. A “Policy Analyst” might be classified as EC-04 or PM-04 depending on the department and the nature of the work. A “Software Developer” is almost always IT-02 or IT-03.

This means the same job title can have different salaries depending on which classification it falls under. Understanding the classification system is essential for anyone applying to federal government jobs or negotiating their position within the public service.
