About the CX Classification

The CX (Correctional Services) group covers correctional officers working in federal penitentiaries operated by the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC). CX officers are responsible for the custody, control, and supervision of federal offenders serving sentences of two years or more. This includes managing institutional security, conducting cell searches, escorting inmates, responding to emergencies, and supporting rehabilitation programming. CX is one of the most physically demanding and operationally intense classifications in the federal public service.

CX-01 is a correctional officer in training or on probation. CX-02 is the full working-level correctional officer — the most common rank in federal institutions. CX-03 covers senior correctional officers with specialized responsibilities. CX-04 and CX-05 are supervisory roles: unit managers, security managers, and assistant wardens at various security levels. CX compensation includes significant premiums for shift work, weekend duty, and hazardous conditions — these can add $10,000–$20,000 annually above base salary.

The CX group is represented by the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers (UCCO-SACC-CSN). Working conditions are among the most challenging in government: 12-hour rotating shifts, constant exposure to high-risk situations, and the psychological demands of working in a correctional environment. Despite these challenges, CX positions offer strong job security, a defined-benefit pension, and competitive total compensation when premiums are factored in. Recruitment typically requires a post-secondary diploma in criminology, social work, or a related field, plus successful completion of the Correctional Training Program.
