About the EC Classification

The EC (Economics and Social Science Services) group is the home of federal economists, policy analysts, researchers, and social scientists. It's one of the most academically demanding groups in the public service — most positions at EC-03 and above require at least a master's degree or substantial equivalent work experience. EC employees work across nearly every department: developing federal budgets at Finance Canada, analyzing trade policy at Global Affairs, evaluating social programs at ESDC, and producing statistical research at Statistics Canada.

EC-01 through EC-03 are analytical roles — research assistants, junior economists, and policy analysts who draft briefings, analyze data, and support senior staff. EC-04 and EC-05 are the working-level policy analyst positions where most experienced EC employees spend their careers: leading analysis, writing policy memos, and advising directors. EC-06 through EC-08 are senior and principal economist roles — these positions are relatively rare and involve significant strategic influence, managing teams of analysts, or representing Canada in international economic forums.

EC is one of the fastest-growing groups in the federal public service, driven by demand for evidence-based policy and data analysis. The EC collective agreement is negotiated between Treasury Board and CAPE (Canadian Association of Professional Employees). If you're an economist or policy analyst considering federal service, the EC-04 to EC-06 range is where most of the interesting work happens — EC-04 at $91,953 to EC-06 at $120,740 represents the sweet spot of responsibility and compensation.
