About the FB Classification

The FB (Border Services) group covers the uniformed officers of the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA): port of entry officers, inland enforcement officers, intelligence officers, and dog handlers. FB officers are responsible for enforcing the Customs Act, Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, and dozens of other pieces of legislation at Canada's 117 land ports, airports, and marine facilities. The FB classification is unique in the federal public service — it's a uniformed, enforcement-oriented group with working conditions more similar to police than typical public servants.

FB-01 through FB-03 cover trainee and junior officer roles, with most newly hired BSOs (Border Services Officers) entering at FB-03 ($72,167–$84,001) after completing the Border Services Officer Training Program in Rigaud, Quebec. FB-04 ($84,001–$90,313) is the full working-level BSO position — the most common rank among CBSA's approximately 9,000 uniformed staff. FB-05 and FB-06 cover specialized and supervisory roles. FB-07 and FB-08 are superintendent and chief superintendent equivalents.

FB compensation includes significant shift differentials and weekend premiums on top of base salary, which can add $5,000–$15,000 annually for officers working irregular hours at busy ports of entry. The FB group is represented by the Customs and Immigration Union (CIU), a component of PSAC. Unlike RCMP (who operate under a separate framework), CBSA officers have full collective bargaining rights. The FB classification is sometimes compared to the CX (Correctional Officer) group at Corrections Canada — similar enforcement work but different operational contexts.
