About the AG Classification

The AG (Agriculture) group covers agricultural scientists, agronomists, and food science researchers working for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). AG employees conduct research on crop science, soil health, animal husbandry, food safety, and agricultural sustainability. Their work ranges from developing drought-resistant crop varieties to assessing the environmental impact of farming practices to studying emerging plant and animal diseases.

AG-01 covers junior researchers and scientists in supervised roles. AG-02 is the working-level research scientist conducting independent agricultural research programs. AG-03 and above cover senior scientists, research managers, and directors of agricultural research centres. Many AG positions require graduate degrees in agricultural science, biology, or a related field. AAFC operates a network of research centres across Canada, and AG scientists are often based outside the National Capital Region.

The AG group is represented by PIPSC under the Applied Science and Patent Examination (SP) collective agreement. Agricultural research is inherently seasonal in Canada, and many AG scientists spend significant time conducting field trials during growing seasons. The group plays a critical role in Canadian food security and agricultural competitiveness — AG research on disease-resistant crops, sustainable farming practices, and food safety directly supports Canada's agricultural export industry, which generates over $80 billion annually.
