About the MT Classification
The MT (Meteorology) group covers meteorological technicians and technologists who support Canada's weather forecasting and climate monitoring operations. MT employees work primarily at Environment and Climate Change Canada's Meteorological Service, operating weather observation stations, launching weather balloons, maintaining meteorological instruments, and processing observational data that feeds into weather forecasting models.
MT-01 and MT-02 cover entry-level and working-level meteorological technicians responsible for surface and upper-air weather observations. MT-03 through MT-05 cover senior technicians, technical specialists, and station supervisors. MT-06 and MT-07 are management positions overseeing networks of observation stations. Many MT positions involve shift work and are located at weather stations across Canada, including remote northern locations.
The MT group is distinct from the PC (Physical Sciences) group, which covers the meteorologists who actually produce weather forecasts. MT technicians collect the observational data that meteorologists use — surface observations, radiosonde launches, radar monitoring, and instrument calibration. The group is represented by PSAC under the Technical Services (TC) collective agreement. Despite the critical nature of weather observation for aviation safety and severe weather warnings, MT positions are among the more modestly compensated technical roles in the federal government.
